There and Back Again - Watch out Bilbo Baggins!
Dolly in Poland has a new look! Like it? I think the pictures look better with a darker background and hey, I love blue!
Wanna say thanks to all my readers, especially those that leave comments because comments make me feel extra loved! ;) If you are wanting to leave a comment and are having problems doing so, you may need to set up an account with blogger and acquire a sign-in name, although like Mike the Annonymous, leaving an annonymous message shouldn't be a problem
Getting carried away with the "bad boy" again, I ventured on another project, or as Bryce would say "photo essay" today to try and capture the essence of Warsaw as I preceive her when I get the rare chance to walk to school and back. So what follows are a line of photos taking from the Academy, jumping to Warsaw University where I have Monday-Wednesday Polish lessons, and then following enroute to the train station. I toyed with making the pictures smaller in order to fit them neatly on the page and lessen loading time, but being this small they are already lacking so much detail, so sorry! But here we go!
The pictures start from about lunch time as I happened to be outside eating my lunch.
To the right
Back view from the park
And just over a bit to put it all in perspective, this building in the distance is the Palace of Culture (Commy Building) our gift from Stalin in the heart of central Warsaw.
Direct back. The school has a pretty cool lay-out of square in three stories with a little outdoor sitting type area in the middle.
There are also some cool buildings going on opposite the Academy.
This is the last and first leg of my trip, the street which proceed. The Academy is on the road between these two buildings.
This is where Foksal street starts. Foksal comes right off of Nowy Swiat (New World) and happens to be where one of our Adventist Churches in Warsaw is located.
Nowy Swiat is really famous for it's shopping and has a nice atmosphere over all.
Often on Sundays in the summer (and maybe winter too, I don't know because I stay locked up in Podkowa in the winter) they close the street to cars and it becomes for pedestrians only.
It's about a 10 minute walk to Warasw University. There are some neat things to see along the way, such as the Copernicus monument
Almost directly across from the University is the Famous Church of the Cross where Chopin's heart is.
And behind these very gates lies Warsaw University. (cue Angels: "Ahhhhhhh")
Most buildings are behinds these gates, however there is an entrance to the Polonicum from the street.
Across from the Polonicum is the University bus stop where on a normal day I would catch bus 175 to the central station. I have named this picture "we all wait." This woman sits here almost everyday.
This is the farthest I go, so on the return trip, let's slip ahead to Foksal street again. Do you remember where it is?
Across from Foskal is where Chmielna Street begins- one of my favorite places to walk in the city.
Along this street are a ton of really neat shops and cafes (op. 3, no. 1)
An intersection that splits it in half
My favorite Italian designer (way out of my league though)
And once again, on the other side of the street.
Chmielna Street lies behind Galeria Centrum seen here from its front entrance...
Across Galeria Centrum is the Palac of Culture again. Not the greatest picture, but it gives an idea of how big the thing is scale wise.
Galeria Centrum from across the street
via a very busy underground
From here, the central train station is in sight
And we're pretty much home free, straight on Jerusalem Street. I usually take the tram that runs along this road.
Before we dip under ground, check out the construction. There is always something new being built in Warsaw.
And we finally arrive at last at the wkd station. From here, you can find your way to Podkowa, can't you? ;)
We must hurry because MAK is home waiting...
Hope you feel as emersed now as I do. It was great taking you with me!

Yes, this is Mr. Anonymous again!! Great picture essay of Warsaw, Dolly. I really wish you'd asked me to come along with you!! In fact, it would be nice to know that you're doing OK, since your phone is unavailable (I finally got through to Ania last night and she told me that in fact, yes, you are doing fine but had lost your phone).
Let's see, perhaps a few supporting comments and thoughts on the pictures? Chmielna street is an extension of Foksal running north/south, and intersected by Nowy Swiat. A nice pedestrian zone and from what I've heard, along with Nowy Swiat, the most heavily trafficked street in the world. I find that a bit hard to believe, but certainly one of the most expensive in the world. Even the beggars and panhandlers cannot be avoided, except at 6am when they're still too hung over to come out and ply their "trade". Incidentally, the shutting down of Nowy Swiat in the summer is a tragic annoyance and waste; the buses can't go through there which really upsets the traffic flow (of me when I'm trying to get through!). Besides, it doesn't help anybody as far as I can tell; most people habitually walk on the sidewalks anyway. Even when the street is open to regular traffic, it's closed to all cars except buses and taxis (and of course, those cars with diplomatic immunity which in reality means all government vehicles) Closing off the street in summer? Dumb government idea.
The Palace of Culture is actually the best looking example of many such buildings built by Stalin and crew around the Soviet bloc. There are seven of them in Moscow alone, but not one is nearly as balanced and elegant(?) as ours. So WE RULE!!!
You took a picture of your inner courtyard at school, but from the back yard park, which is a way cool place to hang out and immerse yourself in the cacophonic and beauteous tunes drifting out of the various rehearsal rooms at the university. Especially in the spring/summer/fall period.
I wonder what Chopin's heart looks like after all these years??
The underground! What a concept. It's been in the designing stage since 1928. Even after the Communist 5 year plan for Warsaw, which promised 6 full lines by 1955, construction wasn't started until 1983. The first of six lines has yet to be completed. To the credit of the fastidious and efficient bureaucrats, 2 more stops have been opened in 8 years, so we shouldn't complain. An addendum to the madness: about 5 years ago the government decided to give millions of out of work coal minors 50,000 zloty ($15,000) each (which is a monumental sum here) as a life-time settlement to satisfy their grumpiness. Instead of being satiated, they continue to beg for more handouts and clog the unemployment lines for more government doles. And conventional wisdom calls for them to be brought to Warsaw and finish digging the metro lines. Doesn't that make sense?? They should be able to whip out all 6 lines within a couple more years. As expected, this idea has fallen on deaf ears, especially from the minors themselves, who'd much rather live free off taxpayer's money.
Speaking of new construction, it's an awesome sight. This is the only city in Europe with any skyscrapers of any note (save for Frankfurt, Germany, which has 3 modern skyscrapers in the center built 10-15 years ago). London also has a few, and Paris way outside the city proper. But Warsaw is unique; it's had a skyscraper since 1953 (the beloved gift from Stalin built from Polish slave labor and the bricks from Elblag and other cities). And due to its unique nature (having been 80% leveled by the Nazis during WWII and further ruined by Commies afterwards), it has had a unique opportunity to build them. In the past 8 years, I've seen over 200 new buildings rise like Phoenixes from the ashes, many of them true and wonderful skyscrapers. Private enterprise does wonders. The building in the picture next to the Central Train Station is a new shopping mall, with the largest glass roof in Europe, built by the same people who built the amazing glass roof of the British Museum in London.
Dolly, I think you're trying to wage war on dial-uppers!! Heh heh... But even with 1mb/s, I have trouble downloading all the pictures. I'm sure a great part of that, however, is the background, which takes a long time to load.
Take care and stop by or contact me if you ever have time or get a new telephone. :)))
Dolly, let's meet at my place on Friday at 1:00pm; I finish a lesson there at that time. Or contact me otherwise due to this:
