Always the Underdog

Big day. Super Bowl. And I'm alone in Poland where no one appreciates American Football. Question: Is the Philadelphian Fan setting himself up for disappointment? Let's look at the record during my lifetime:

Flyers make it to the Stanley Cup Finals in 85, 87, and 97 only to loose each time Last cup won was 1974 against Boston.

Phillies go to the World Series in 83 and 93 and lose both times. The 93 lost was a personal heartbreak to me as an 11 year old die hard fan who was in love with catcher Darren Dalton and had named her cat after 1st baseman John Kruk. I cried for 45 minutes after Joe Carter hit the home run that took the series for Toronto. The Last World Series win for Philly was in 1980 against Kansas City.

Sixers actually did bring home a trophy during my lifetime and that was in 1983 against the Lakers. But who can forget Iverson's boys and their Brutal loss to the same component in 2001. Inbetween this time, and since, the Sixers haven't made it to the final round.

In 39 years of Super Bowl (and hey, I wouldn't be able to read that XXXIX if it weren't for all of that hymn analyzation in music theory under my belt) the Eagles went once in 1981 and lost to Oakland, and then there is today...

So in 24 years of sports history, Philly takes home 1 trophy. Why do the fans even bother with such a record? Is it any wonder that we throw trash, start fights, and keep the police busy? Yet, the passion! Still, the hunger! Could the turning point be in Miami today? Will the Philadelphia Fan be able to hold his head high, sport his hot ghetto gear, and get drunk in merry making long into Monday morning? What does today hold for the underdog?
